2010/11 League 2 Predictions/review

So, here are my pre-season league two predictions, which I'll come back to now and then to compare to reality.  Starting now after 4 games, and again at the quarter, half, three quarter stages and the seasons end.
Click here for my quarter season review, and here for the half season review, and keep reading to see how my predictions are working out.

Accrington Stanley

Last year, 15th

New signings of note, No-one I've heard of, but Michael Hall came from Blackburn, so maybe he's good. They sold Bobby Grant to Scunthorpe for 260,000, so he'll probably be hard to replace.

Prediction, Last years money woe's hopefully won't be repeated, but their current first place position certainly won't last. "oo are dey?" a non league team! 23rd and relegated.
After 4 games, 7th
Quarter season, 12th, They're doing bettter than I thought, going along quite comfortably in mid table, highlight of the season so far would be the 7-4 win over Gillingham, though they've lost both league games since then and have been forced to resign from the paint pot for fielding an ineligible player.
Half season, 12th Still going along nicely in mid table, though recent results, 3 wins and an unlucky draw against league leaders Chesterfield will have fans hoping for better. Got to the second round of the FA cup.

Aldershot Town

Last year, 6th, lost in first round of playoffs.

New signings of note, former Reading and Burnley midfielder Glen Little came from Sheffield United and he seems very confident

"From what I've seen so far I'd be very disappointed if we had a season where nothing happens.

"I'm expecting us to be challenging. It happened last season and I don't see why it can't happen again."

He added: "I'd like to think I've come here because we've got a chance of winning promotion."

Prediction, the Phoenix will continue to rise up into league one, where it will plateau and inevitably start wilting again. 2nd.
After 4 games, 9th
Quarter season, 7th.  Consecutive wins in their last 2 games have Aldershot moving up the table and into a playoff spot.  They've struggled to score goals, but marvin Morgan has 4 in his last 6 games so can hopefully keep that going.
Half Season, 19th Aldershot have really plummetted, and it finally cost manager Kevin Dillon his job, fired after a fourth consecutive home defeat.  Dean Holdsworth did very well with Newport County, so Aldershot will be hoping he can rescue their season, a point at Bury is a good start for him.  They only have 21 goals all season, and only 8 in 10 home games.  Lost to Dover in the 2nd round of the FA Cup.

Barnet

Last year, 21st.

New signings of note, no-one I know

Prediction, despite some encouraging pre season wins, last years struggles will continue, and another spell in the conference awaits. 24th.
After 4 games, 24th
Quarter season, 24th Barnet are still struggling, with only one win in their last 8 games, giving me no reason to regret my last place prediction.
Half season, 22nd Have climbed out of the relegation places, but mainly by virtue of having played 4 more games than 23rd place Lincoln.  Manager Mark Stimson was fired on january 1st, with Paul Fairclough acting as caretaker manager, and the team responded with their first away win of the season at Bradford.  Took Charlton to a replay before losing in the first round of the FA Cup.

Bradford City

Last year, 14th.

New signings of note, Jake Speight, did well for Mansfield last year, 17 goals in 33 games so Bradford signed him up for 25,000, completely unaware he had a court case due for assaulting his girlfriend. He got sentenced to twelve weeks, but appealled and got the sentence suspended and 100 hours of community service. This article  makes him sound like a real twat, but it's the star so take it with a grain of salt.

Prediction, they'll be better than last year, but still won't really do as well as a team of their size should. 10th
After 4 games, 20th
Quarter season, 19th, They dropped as far as 23rd before 2 consecutive wins now have them 5 points off relegation.  They're really struggling to score, with no-one getting beyond the 2 goal mark yet.
Half season, 14th Things have picked up at Bradford, though they are very inconsistent and are still having trouble scoring, just 22 goals in 24 games.  Manager Peter Taylor turned down an assistant job at Newcastle to stay at Valley Parade.  Lost a 7 goal thriller to Colchester in the first round of the FA cup.

Burton Albion

Last year, 13th

New signings of note, Darren Moore, he's 36 but has had a lot of big league experience with West Brom and Derby, and back in the 90's with Torquay and Doncaster, he was an absolute monster at this level. Also quite importantly they held on to last years top score with 21 goals, Shaun Harrad.

Manager, and Canadian, Paul Peschisolido is talking a good game,

"I think we should be challenging," Peschisolido told BBC Radio Derby. "We'll set our sights on promotion."
Peschisolido is convinced the strength in depth of his squad this time around will make the difference to Burton's promotion aspirations.
"We've assembled a very, good squad, with strength in depth, athleticism and quality all around the pitch," he said.
"I don't want to get too carried away but I'm delighted by the way it looks."

Prediction, after an entertaining first season in league 2 , they'll push on and really make waves. 6th, lose in first round of playoffs.
After 4 games, 11th
Quarter season,  15th, They were in a playoff spot for a while, but have only 1 win in the last month or so, so are now firmly back in mid table mediocrity, Shaun Harrad is leading the way with 7 goals, and their defence is much tighter than last year, but overall they'll be disappointed so far.
Half Season, 20th Poor away form has them this low in the table, though they do have games in hand on most of the teams above them.  Shaun Harrad continues to lead the way with 13 goals in all competitions, including the two that saw them beat Middlesbrough and advance to the 4th round of the FA cup.

Bury

Ooh latin in ther crest, classy. vincit omnia industria? My guess is hard work always wins. Kind of like Accrington's but without the prudence.

Last year, 9th.

New signings of note, no-one I recognise, the usual cast of lower league journeymen and premier league cast offs. George Sweeney gets an excellent reference from a Grimsby fan on the forum of Bury's website...

Well, Sweeney, or lard arse as he is more commonly known to GTFC fans has ability in bucket loads, unfortunately he has an attitude to match only a bad one... He can play some great through balls and also has a quality strike, free kicks can be quality and corners not bad either (these traits can only be seen in an interested sweeney). You will no doubt get frustrated watching him turning in circles trying to get the ball on his left peg as his right foot is only for standing other than that it may aswell not be there, also he will not put in any tackles of note, you probably won't see him in either box as he is to slow or of the attitude he is too good to run... My thoughts are you should have steered well clear (for our sake i'm pleased you didn't) what will piss you off more than anything is for the first 10-15 games he will show you how good he can be then if he follows the same path as he did for us will then flatter decieve... Anyway I don't want to sound to negative for you guys and will say this, keep him happy, away from take aways and beer, fit and interested you will no doubt have a gem unfortunately if you fail to do any of these he will just be a drain on your resources and morale...

sounds promising!

Prediction, after making the playoffs in 09, and 9th last year, Bury's stagnation continues, despite a 4-0 thumping of leeds pre season. 15th.
After 4 games, 12th
Quarter season, 4th.  They've had a good start, and are really on a run right now, 6 games unbeaten, and with 12 goals in their last 4 games, Ryan Lowe is tied for the league lead with 10 goals already.
Half season, 6th It's Bury's great away form that has them this high, 7 away wins compared to only 3 at home.  Lowe has slowed down a bit, but is still 2nd in league scoring with 13 goals.  A great run in October/November had them higher, but since their "winter break" they've struggled, just 2 point from their last 4 games.  Lost in the 2nd round of the FA Cup.
Cheltenham Town

A redesigned crest for this season,

The shield, in red, white and black, depicts a robin flying upwards.

Guy Douglas from designers flb told BBC Gloucestershire: "This was our most contemporary idea. We wanted one that represented the optimism of the club.

"In the annals of history, most of the robins have been still, waiting. This is flying upwards and moving forward. We hope it's a catalyst."

Ain't marketing bollocks great!

Last year, 22nd, so let's hope that robin IS going to fly upwards or they're fucked.

New signings of note, Steve Elliott has had a lot of higher up experience with Derby, Blackpool and Bristol Rovers, and is still only 31, so should be a good addition to their defence.
Prediction, they'll do better this year, rising to the ranks of the mediocre, 13th.
After 4 games, 6th
Quarter season, 9th, A good home team, but a poor away team, they're still doing ok so far, with Wes Thomas' 7 goals leading the way.
Half season, 10th, Cheltenham are only a couple of points off a playoff spot, but have been inconsistent all season, only once stringing together two league wins in a row.  Lost to Southampton in the second round of the FA Cup.

Chesterfield

Last year, 8th.

New signings of note, Jamaican international Simon Ford, but no-one that really stands out to me, and with club legend striker Jack Lester getting on a bit, they might struggle. They've got a new stadium, the depressingly corporate B2net stadium, which is a good reason to link to this from their last game at Saltergate. 'it iiiiiiittt!

Prediction, they'll struggle to adapt to the new ground, and though they'll improve in the second half, they'll be disappointed with another 8th place finish.
After 4 games, 4th
Quarter season, 1st.  They're not struggling at all at the new ground, 16 out of 18 points, and the one game they drew they came back from 4-1 down to draw 5-5.  They're maintaining over a 2 goals per game pace, with Craig Davies and Danny Whitaker at 7 and 6 goals respectively.
Half season, 1st.  They're still not struggling at home, with 10 wins and 35 goals in 13 games so far.  Davies and Whitaker are still leading they way with 13 and 11 goals, and Jack Lester also has 9.  5 points ahead of 2nd, and 9 points ahead of 4th, they're looking good for promotion.  Lost in the 2nd round of  the FA Cup.

Crewe Alexandra

Last year, 18th

New signings of note, Defender David Artell fulfills the obligatory lower league journyeman signing, while the only person they paid cash (20,000) for was Antoni Sarcevic, who seems exotic, but the fact that he signed from Woodley Sports and doesn't even have a wikipedia page suggests to not get excited. they sold two players, John Bradford and James Bailey to Derby for a combined total of roughly a million, so hopefully they've got some new Dario Gradi made youngsters to come in and help out.

Prediction, they'll struggle, and spend a lot of time agonising over whether club legend Dario Gradi should be fired or not. he will be, but it won't make much difference and they'll only just avoid relegation by finishing 21st.
After 4 games, 13th
Quarter season, 10th.  They're doing ok with only 2 defeats so far this season, however 7 draws mean they're still outside of the playoffs.  With 27 goals, they're the top scorers so far, helped by a 7-0 thrashing of Barnet and a 5-5 draw at chesterfield.  They're spreading the goals out as well with 5 players at 3 or more league goals already.
Half season, 5th.   Crewe have won 4 out of 5 games in the new year to break into the playoff positions.  They have 49 goals, tied for 1st in the league, with Clayton Donaldson with 13 and Shaun Miller with 12 leading the way there.  Lost to non-league Tamworth in the 1st round of the FA Cup.

Gillingham

The latin on their crest is "Domus Clamantium" which wikipedia no doubt reliably informs me means, "the home of the shouting men" which is actually kind of awesome, if a little bizarre.

Last year, 21st and relegated from league one.

New signings of note, they sold Simeon Jackson to Norwich for big money, which they don't seem to have spent on transfer fees from what I can tell. Adebayo Akinfenwa has been brought in to replace Jackson, and he's had a decent scoring record for Northampton over the last couple of years, so should be good.

Prediction, they'll recover from the loss of jackson, and challenge for promotion all year, finishing 5th and losing in the playoff final.
After 4 games, 17th
Quarter season, 16th.  They aren't scoring much and have now gone a club record 33 games without an away victory, spannning 3 seasons.  A solid home record has them in mid table, one of 6 teams with 14 points, Akinfenwa is their top scorer with 4 goals.
Half season, 7th.  Andy hessenthaler won manager of the month for December, as the Gills won both games in December as part of a run that has seen them claim 21 out of the last 24 points.  Akinfenwa has 7 goals, but has been overtaken by Cody McDonald with 12.  Lost to Dover in the 1st round of the FA Cup.

Hereford United

Fuck Hereford! not only did they let Canadian hero Gavin McCallum go, after he became only the second player to play internationally and the first to score, while at the club, they also rather depressingly were able to poach their new manager Simon Davey away from Darlington, so fuck Hereford.

Last year, 16th.

New signings of note, no-one that I've heard of, but new signing Joe Colbeck scored twice in his debut, in a 6-2 win over Neath.

Prediction. hopefully they crash and burn, but they'll probably do quite well, and finish a respectable 9th.
After 4 games, 16th
Quarter season, 24th.  Ha!  It all went wrong, they really struggled, had a long goalless drought, and Simon Davey got fired after just 10 games.  Since then, they got a very credible point at Port Vale, and then came back from 3-0 down to beat Northampton 4-3, so things are looking up for them.
Half season, 23rd.  Things are still looking bleak for Hereford, mainly due to their home form where they only have 1 win all season.  On the positive side, that home win is part of a 5 game unbeaten streak in 2011 that has seen them clinch 7 points out of 9 as well as reach the 4th round of the FA Cup.  Mathieu Manset has 13 goals in his last 16 games in all competitions.

Lincoln City

Last year, 20th.

New signings of note, Jamie Clapham, formerly of Birmingham, Ipswich, Leeds and others, and part of Notts County's winning team last year, Jamie is a Lincoln Boy, who's grandfather also played for Lincoln back in the 50's. heartwarming.

And of course Canadian Gavin McCallum, who is coming off an 8 goal in 20 games year for Hereford and that goal against Venezuela. His transfer dragged on for over a month due to some legal/compensation kind of thing, but became official just this week, and he's apparently lined up to be playing as a full on striker rather than the winger role he's generally played until now, so potentially could have a good year, learning from his new boss Chris Sutton.

Prediction: they'll be better than last year, but not great, 12th.
After 4 games, 15th
Quarter season, 21st.  They've struggled to score goals all year, with only Ben Hutchinson having scored more than once in the league, and he's only got 2.  Manager Chris Sutton left for "personal reasons" replaced by Steve Tilson who had a lot of success at Southend.
Half season, 24th.  They do have a lot of games in hand on the teams directly above them, 5 in the case of 21st place Stockport, but are going to have to start scoring to take advantage of those games, only 17 goals so far this season is the main reason for their lowly position.  Canadian forward Gavin McCallum scored his first of the season today, so will hopefully a get a few games and be able to improve the situation.  Lost in the 2nd round of the FA Cup to fellow struggles Hereford.

Macclesfield Town.

Rather preposterously, wikipedia claims Vladimir Putin and the rock as Macclesfield fans.

Last year, 19th

New signings of note, no-one, even going on the fans forums, they don't really seem all that excited by anyone. Matt Hamshaw gets some well wishes from Notts County fans, so maybe he'll be good.

Prediction, another season of struggle, 19th again.
After 4 games, 22nd
Quarter season, 13th.  They've recovered after a slow start, but remain quite incosistent, with a better record away than at home.
Half season, 18th.  Only 1 point out of the last 5 games has them flirting with the relegation places, and were knocked out of the FA Cup in the 2nd round via a 6-0 thumping from Huddersfiled.  All that is overshadowed though by the tragic death of midfielder Richard Butcher, just 10 months after former manager Keith Alexander died.

Morecambe

Another new logo, and a new stadium, worringly it's had setbacks, so planned pre-season games had to be cancelled, but the grand opening is still tentatively scheduled for august 10th

Last year, 4th, lost in playoffs

New signings of note, Phil Jevons was on loan with Morecambe all last year and scored a lot of goals for them , so they'll be happy to have him signed him up on a two year contract.

Prediction. there seems to be an air of optimism amongst the Morecambe fans, and I agree, I think they'll go one better and finish 3rd.
After 4 games, 21st
Quarter season, 20th.  With Phil Jevons not scoring at all in the league, they've struggled, with only 13 goals and 3 wins all year, though those 3 wins have come in their last 6 games, so hopefully they're on the way up.
Half season, 13th.   They are on the way up, a 3 game win streak has them comfortably in mid-table after poor eearly form had boss Sammy McIlroy thinking of quitting.  A hamstring injury to Jevons hasn't helped, with on-one else on the team above 3 league goals yet.  Lost in the 1st round of the FA Cup.

Northampton Town

What the hell is going on in that badge? that's what they used from 2006-2010, but they're going to revert back to their traditional badge for this season.

Still quite what the fuck, but the dragon? and the lion/warthog? at least look a little friendlier now.

Last year, 11th.

New signings of note. Irishman Tadgh Purcell did really well and scored quite a few last year with Darlington, so imagine what he might do with competent teammates.

They're suing some of the posters on a Northampton fans forum

If any poster wants to post accusations against the club, our Chairman, Directors, personnel or employees in the future then please ensure you are fully able to back up your accusations with the necessary evidence in a court of law.

Our solicitors will be asking the administrators of this board for contact details of 2 posters from the 'sinking ship' thread and we do intend to take legal action against them.

This is a fans message board and we have no intention of intervening again but we will take action again without warning should the practice of posting false allegations against the club, our Chairman, Directors, personnel or employees continue.

Prediction, with karma like that, 14th is the best they can hope for.
After 4 games, 19th
Quarter season, 22nd.   Despite a league cup run that has included wins over Brighton, Reading and Liverpool, only 2 league wins and 12 goals have them very close to a relegation spot, which wasn't helped by them recently blowing a 3-0 half time lead against bottom club Hereford.
Half season, 16th.  Good hoime form has Northampton moving away form the bottom of the table, despite a continuing struggle to score goals.  Hopefully the recent transfer acquisition of Francis Laurent will help with that.  Lost to Sheffield Wednesday in the 2nd round of the FA Cup.

Oxford United

An ox, and a ford. keeping it simple

Last year, 3rd in conference, promoted via playoffs.

New signings of note, the quality doesn't jump out, but the quantity certainly does, a lot of new arrrivals to bolster their conference line up.

Prediction, momentum's a wonderful thing, as are big crowds, so they'll do well, finish 4th, and win the playoffs again
After 4 games, 18th
Quarter season, 14th.  One of the mid table block of teams on 14 points, Oxford have a stingy defence but have had trouble scoring, with only 4 players with league goals to their name so far, though James Constable is doing well with 6.  Does anyone know if the owner of the sweater came back to claim it?
Half season, 9th.  6 wins in 7 league games have Oxford heading towards the playoff places.  James Constable has 8 league goals and Tom Craddock has 9.  Lost in the 1st round of the FA Cup.

Port Vale

Last year, 10th

New signings of note, not much on the playing side of things, but they have a potential new chairman Mike Newton, who's talking about putting in 400,000, so that might lead to something good. One player they have signed, Gary Roberts, is certainly an interesting case, played for a lot of england youth teams, but has serious drinking and gambling problems, so his career has just spiralled down, including getting fired from Rotherham last year for disciplinary issues.

"On a typical Saturday night out I'd have a few pints at the pub and then go to a club and have nine or 10 spirits. I'd then wake up on Sunday morning and have another drink to get over my hangover, and if I didn't have a match the next day go back to the pub and spend the day there. I'm not one of these people who can have one drink and stop. I want another and another and another."
Hopefully he can get himself together enough to contribute.
Prediction, they'll improve, making it to the first round of the playoffs, 7th.
After 4 games, 5th
Quarter season, 2nd.  They're 3 games without a win now after a great run that took them to the top of the table, leading coach Mickey Adams to question their character.  Great away form and only 7 goals against all year has masked struggles at home where they've only scored 6 goals in 6 games.
Half season, 4th.  Vale have maintained their form despite a schedule that has seen them only play 9 out of 23 games at home so far.   They've lost 4 straight away games by a combined 11-1 score, so will be looking forward to playing some home games, weather and FA Cup related postponements mean they've only played 2 of those since the end of October.  Manager Micky Adams resigned to go to Sheffield United and has been replaced by Jim Gannon who won promotion from this division with Stockport in 2008.  Lost in the 3rd round of the FA Cup to Burnley.

Rotherham United

The Chuckle brothers are honorary life club presidents! which more than makes up for the fact that they don't currently have a ground so are playing in Sheffield until their new stadium gets built.

Last year, 5th, lost in playoff final.

New signings of note, the best news is that they held on to Adam Le Fondre, their top scorer from last year. None of the new guys look super impressive, but maybe Tom Elliott on loan from Leeds is good.

Prediction, with Le Fondre banging in the goals again, and legendary manager Ronnie Moore at the helm for a full season, they'll be the team to beat. 1st
After 4 games 3rd
Quarter season, 3rd. Adam Le Fondre is banging them in, with 10 goals so far, and they're been a very good team all year, currently undefeated in the league since September 4th and looking very good for promotion.
Half season, 3rd.  They're certainly consitent, The Millers are still going strong, with a 7 game unbeaten league streak just ended by a loss to Southend.  Le Fondre continues to lead the league with 16 goals though no-one else has more than 4 for Rotherham, so hopefully they can keep him for the full season.  Lost in the 1st round of the FA Cup to non-league York.

Shrewsbury Town

They're already having injuries, and had to pull out of the final of the prestigous South West Challenge cup! I didn't know that they moved out of Gay Meadow back in 2007, that's a shame.

Last year, 12th

New signings of note, no-one in particular, but David Raven used to be Liverpool's reserve team captain and had a decent few years at Carlisle.

Prediction, they lost a few good players from last year, and after two play off final losses in 08 and 09, they seem to be slipping a bit. this will continue, 16th.
After 4 games, 2nd
Quarter season, 5th.  After a bit of a slump in October, they got a win which moved them back up to 5th.  Jake Robinson has 8 goals for them so far.
Half season, 8th.  The goals really dried up for Robinson who hasn't scored since October 16th, and only 3 points form their last 5 games have seen Shrewsbury drop from an automatic promotion spot to out of the playoffs.  Lost to Southampton in the 1st round of the FA Cup.

Southend United.

Morecambe's shrimp looks tougher, but this one has swords, hmmmm.

They're literally just out of administration, but apparently new manager Paul Sturrock had a bunch of transfers lined up ready to be made official as soon as their transfer embargo gets lifted, so maybe they're not quite as screwed as Darlington were last year in similar circumstances.

Last year, 23rd in league one.

New signings of note, Blair Sturrock, who just got signed for the fourth time by his dad Paul. Aaaaaaaawww. that's sweet. Also Louis Soares who's a Barbadian international who seemed a fairly regular player at Aldershot.

Prediction, it's going to be a rough year, both on and off the pitch, but as long as they don't go back into administration and get points deducted, they should just be good enough, 20th.
After 4 games, 14th
Quarter season, 17th.  They're struggling, but have done well against other weak clubs, 3 of their 4 wins coming against teams below them in the league, the other was against then top of the table Torquay.  Having two 5-goal scorers already definitely helps.
Half season, 15th.  Southend are doing ok, in 15th place, mainly due to their away form, 5 wins so far as opposed to just 3 home wins.  Lost in the 1st round of the FA Cup.

Stevenage

They dropped the Borough from their name! Not sure if their nickname will continue to be the Boro or not.

Last year, 1st in conference.

New signings of note, John Mousinho has come from Wycombe, and one of their best players from last year, Michael Bostwick has signed a new contract with them, seems like they're more or less sticking with the promotion winning squad.

Prediction, a slightly disappointing season of consolidation awaits, 17th.
After 4 games, 10th
Quarter season, 8th.  A good recent run has them on the edge of the playoffs, if they can improve their home form, only 2 wins out of 6th so far, they may be able to challenge for promotion.
Half season, 17th.  Struggles to score, with only 1 player with more than 3 league goals so far, have seen Stevenage slip down the table, with only 2 wins in their last 10 league games, both against Barnet.  It's beeen a different story in the FA Cup, as Stevenage have reached the 4th round, beating both old and new Wimbledon, and then Newcastle in the 3rd round.  A memorable occasion marred only by one of their players being punched by a fan in the post match celebrations.

Stockport County

Animo et Fide, with courage and faith, they're going to need a lot of it, they seem to have stabilised somewhat after a hellish financial time of it recently, going into administration then having several takeover bids rejected by the FA! and we all know what high standards they have. Obviously all that has caused a lot of problems with their squad and hopes aren't high.

"The target has to be to make sure we stay in League Two," Simpson told BBC Radio Manchester.

"My only thought is that we have a team that can finish third bottom and still be here next year."

Simpson added: "We've got no aspirations of competing at the top. We've got to stabilise as this club has been on its belly.

"There's nobody I'm thinking we must finish above."
That's their new manager speaking, in pre season when it's traditional to pretend you've at least got a chance.

Last year, 24th in league two

New signings of note, Barry Conlon, a poor mans Danny Dichio can hopefully still be productive at this level, but that's about it. they're in trouble.

Prediction, they'll be at least 10 points adrift of safety at christmas, but something will click, and they'll go on a run, and secure safety in their last game, pitch invasions, grown men crying, players stripping down to their undies to give souveniers to the fans, the whole shebang. 22nd
After 4 games, 23rd
Quarter season, 18th. They're doing better than I thought they would, mainly thanks to George Donnelly's 7 goals and an unbeaten September, but it still looks like it's going to be a long season, this Saturday's win was their first home win since February, hopefully they can build on that.
Half season, 21st.  Well, they're still doing better than the 3rd bottom Paul Simpson was aiming at, though the teams currently in the relegation spots have 3 and 5 games in hand on them.  The defence has been the problem, with a league high 57 goals in 26 games so far, having conceded at least 3 goals 8 times in their last 12 games.  All that was too much for Simpson to keep his job, Pater Ward taking over as caretaker manager, though he didn't stop them from giving one of the three teams below them, Hereford, their 1st home win of the season.  Stockport are very much in trouble.  Lost in the 1st round of the FA Cup.

Torquay United

Last year 17th

New signings of note, no-one fancy, but Guy Branston seems to be the definition of lower league journeyman, having already played for 18 different clubs. and just look at this picture of him, yikes.

Prediction, fans seem quite confident, mainly based around having their defence and goalie back from last year, who ended the year in fine form. Me? not so much, I'll say 18th.
After 4 games, 1st
Quarter season, 11th Torquay got off to a flyer, winning their first 4 games, and extending a streak of no goals against from last season to 998 minutes, but it's all gone a bit pear shaped since then, with first the goals drying up for a few games, then the defence turning leaky, and they now find themselves out of a playoff spot.
Half season, 11th.  Haven't regained their early season form, so are still on the outside of the playoffs.  Elliot Benyon has 12 goals for them so far this season.  Have reached the 4th round of the FA Cup.

Wycombe Wanderers

That's one blinged up swan.

Last year, 22nd and relegated from league one

New signings of note, Scott Rendell was quite highly sought after, so Wycombe are glad to have him, and Dave Winfield cost them 25,000 from Aldershot and seems to be a decent defender.

Prediction. A lot of people seem to be predicting big things from Wycombe, and of the relegated teams, they're probably in the best shape to bounce back, but 11th is the only spot i've got left, so 11th it is.
After 4 games, 8th
Quarter season, 6th.  They seem to be the class of the relegated teams, Andy Sandell's 5 goals so far and a solid defence leading them to 6th.
Half season, 2nd.  Have won 5 of 6 league games since December to vault into an automatic promotion spot, even though no-one has more than 5 league goals so far.  Lost in the 3rd round of the Fa Cup to Hereford.

Well, so far I'm doing ok, got a few right or very close, Barnet, Stockport Macclesfield, Rotherham, Port Vale, and a few wrong, Torquay being the obvious example.  I'll check back in at the quarter season mark.

Quarter season prediction review.  I've got 3 out of the top 7 and 1 out of the bottom 2, so not too bad really.  Morecambe, Gillingham, and, happily, Hereford are making me look dumb so far.  I'll be back at the halfway mark.
Half season prediction review.  I'm still at 3 out of 7 for the promotion/plyoff spots, with Oxford coming close to making it 4.  Athe bottom, I'm 0 for 2, though Barnet are right there.  Worst predictions so far would be Burton, Aldershot, Crewe, Accrington and Hereford.
